To keep pace with
the rapid global advancement in the
field of Laboratory Medicine, EKO
Pathology was established in the early
1990s. Routine, as well as, specialty
investigations are carried out here with
a full range of modern Autoanalyzers
like Becman Coulter Schiapparelli ACE
and SYNCHRON CX5 with backup SYNCHRON
CX-4.
The immunology
service has been widened to include
Tumor Markers like, CEA, AFp, CA-125,
CA-19.9 and others, apart from the
entire range of hormonal evaluation.
Haematology is equipped with automated
Becman Coulter blood cell counter (5
parts - differential) and coagulometer.
Microbiology section has facilities for
aerobic and anaerobic culture of various
microbes with a wide range of rapid
culture and sensitivity, but will very
soon be replaced by Bactec method. The
Histopathology Department with
facilities for special stain and other
immunohistochemistry procedures, is
being further upgraded for DNA ploidy
for e.g., ER.PR for breast cancer.
Cytology unit
remains busy throughout the day carrying
out routine gynaecological
investigations, as well as, pap smear
study for screening and early detection
of cervical cancer. It will be further
upgraded by cytospin and flow cytometry.
In addition to fine needle aspiration
cytology, this unit also carries out CT
and Ultrasound guided procedures. TRUS
guided prostate has gained popularity
for its accuracy and simplicity, as it
yields adequate material for diagnosis.
Efforts are being made to set up a
modern molecular biology laboratory with
PCR facilities for hepatitis profile and
various inflammatory diseases like
TORCH, TB and others. Stringent quality
control programs have been instituted in
association with CMC Vellore and BIO-RAD,
and executed by a team of highly skilled
and trained technicians under the
guidance of experienced pathologists.
